Akio Nagai Shihan

Karate-Bundestrainer Nakai Akio
“Shotokan Karate is a dynamic and versatile martial art. To master it requires discipline, dedication and a real sense of purpose. It is no use to attempt it in half measures. It demands a routine of daily practice which must be thorough and complete. Only in this way can one achieve a proper Shotokan training.”

Germany, like all national associations of SKI, is lead by a Japanese instructor.
Akio Nagai Shihan, 8th Dan, has lived in Germany since 1965 and is therefore one of the first Japanese teachers in the whole of the country. In 1975 he was a founding member of the S.K.I. Federation. He has worked continuously to build the SKID. Currently, he also serves as the head coach of Spain. The goal of his lifetime work is to transmit Karate-Do to future generations.

As a member of a former samurai family he began to study Karate at the age of 15. Three years later he attended the famous Takushoku University in Tokyo. There he became a Karate instructor and today he is now one of the most brilliant martial art specialists. Nagai Shihan is known far beyond the borders of Germany and Japan. His hard and strict style of teaching was influenced by the Japanese phrase “Ikken Hisatsu” (kill with one blow).

His fast, straight and direct combinations of techniques are famous and are taught to numerous Karateka in Germany and Europe on regularly courses. The training based on the three pillars of Karate: Kihon, Kata and Kumite is practiced intensively on each course and during his workouts. In Nagai Shihans opinion, nobody can learn proper Karate by reading books, but only through constant and hard training.

What appealed to him in Karate, Nagai Shihan sums up: “Karate is similarly to Zen, you need decades to be able to understand it, from the very roots.”

For his services to promote Karate in Germany, Nagai Shihan was awarded with the Order of Merit in 2002 by the German Federal President Johannes Rau.
